Reasons Why It’s The Wrong Site

The site for the proposed incinerator is on Dunston Road in Chesterfield.

Around 30,000 people and 19 schools (not including pre-schools and nurseries) are within a 2 mile radius of the site – so thousands of people are at risk if this MASS-EXPERIMENT goes wrong!

The roads surrounding the site are in some cases no more than country lanes (Dunston Lane and the Cutthorpe end of Dunston Road), while roads around Sheepbridge and Whittington Moor roundabout are already heavily congested. The roads are simply not safe or suitable for the increased volume of traffic, particularly HGVs – the plans indicate at least 1 HGV every 10 minutes. Drivers already ignore the weight restrictions on Dunston Road and Dunston Lane, and surrounding villages like Barlow, Unstone, Holmesfield and Cutthorpe would all suffer from an increase in HGVs, as drivers follow their sat navs through the quickest route.

The site borders open countryside, greenbelt land and agricultural land. There are numerous farms (and allotments) in the surrounding area which will be at risk from dioxin contamination. Wildlife that inhabits and surrounds the site will be destroyed, including nearly 300 square metres of protected woodland.

The open countryside and surrounding villages will be destroyed for the many people who visit and enjoy the area.

A brand new office development is next door to the proposed site, and many other hi-tech/service-based businesses along Dunston Road and on the Sheepbridge Trading Estate. Many of these companies have already said they will move away if planning permission is granted, and they certainly wouldn’t have located here if the plant existed. So hundreds of jobs will be lost and many more future jobs, from the difficulties that will be faced from trying to attract future investment. We have already been told that if the incinerator goes ahead the proposed EcoDome in Unstone (which already has planning permission and will bring many jobs and visitors to the area) will not go ahead
